Rana Jordahl
“I paint to portray not only the structure and color of the local architecture and lowcountry marshes, but also the emotional energy that this wonderful area evokes in the viewer.”
Originally a native of Iowa, Rana delights in exploring Charleston and the surrounding lowcountry with its historically significant architecture, scenic ocean vistas and rich colors of the marshes. Rana is an award winning artist who paints in a loose, impressionistic style with her brush and palette knife. Recently, she has also been experimenting with painting in Encaustic Wax; an ancient medium used by the Greeks and Egyptians combines pigmented beeswax and natural resins which, when cool, creates a stable, archival painting that will last for centuries. Whether traditional oils or oil encaustics, Rana strives for a fresh, contemporary way to capture her subjects. She loves textural paintings with rich color and bold brushwork that transforms ordinary objects into beautiful landscapes and subjects that are unique and unexpected to the viewer.
She is a Co-Owner of Lowcountry Artists Gallery in downtown Charleston, SC and an Exhibiting Member of the Charleston Artist Guild. Her nationally collected oil paintings are represented in private and corporate collections. She resides locally on scenic Daniel Island where she paints both en plein air and in her studio.
