The first Sweet Grass table was inspired by his wife Sarah. She commissioned a local artist, Adeline Mazack, to craft a round, flat Sweet grass basket to serve as the center piece for the table. Using sapele mahogany, which is a large tree native to tropical Africa, seemed not only appropriate with the sweet grass but is a more environmentally sustainable wood than traditional over forested hard woods.
