Joy in the Morning
This painting is a unique experiment in texture from the artist’s personal collection. Except for the birds, the entire surface is created with hundreds of individual paint layers from a palette knife. Each full stroke is placed adjacent to or overlapping the next with no blending.
A vibrant impressionistic study of seagulls in flight over the ocean, the painting captures a lively moment of movement, freedom, and coastal energy. The gulls sweep across the composition at different heights and angles, creating a dynamic sense of motion.
Beneath them, the ocean is rendered with energetic, horizontal strokes, giving the water a sparkling, constantly moving surface. Near the bottom, splashes and disturbed water suggest one of the birds has just skimmed or touched the surface.
The composition is particularly effective because each bird occupies a different position and pose, creating a sense of rhythm and choreography across the canvas. The viewer's eye moves naturally from one gull to another and finally down toward the shimmering water.
The visible brushwork gives the painting a lively, almost tactile quality. Rather than relying on precise realism, the artist uses expressive strokes and warm reflected light to convey the feeling of sunlight, wind, salt air, and motion.
Overall, the painting feels joyful, spirited, and uplifting. It celebrates the freedom of the birds and the expansive beauty of the sea, with a warm coastal palette that makes the entire scene glow.
