About Susie Barret

Susie Barrett

I have always loved painting and visiting Hawaii in 2014 changed my life. While walking down the streets of Honolulu, a friend looked in a store window and commented he liked a painting. I do not know what possessed me, but I replied, ‘I can do that.’ He wasn’t convinced. It was actually a crazy statement as I had no formal art training since my days of high school art class. When I returned home, I picked up a paint brush for the first time in 20 years and painted him my version of the piece as a gift. After that, there was no turning back. Paintings began pouring out of me in what I have come to call my tropical, stained-glass style. I have since branched out with other abstract series. Some incorporate beach sand from my travels. Others explore geometric shape and pattern. I find great joy in transmuting canvas and paint into original works of art. I work in oil over acrylic and textured acrylics on canvas. My pieces are playful and fun, and serve as a reminder to enjoy the beauty of this gift we call life.

I was invited to exhibit my work in Charleston October 2016. I had never been to the area and immediately fell in love with the Lowcountry. By February of 2017, I had quit my day job in Louisiana and relocated to Mount Pleasant to pursue my passion with the art industry and live by the beach. I am in heaven and enjoying exploring my new home.
